Upcycled Winter Sweater Dress

There is nothing like a nice, comfy, warm sweater dress for winter wear. You can easily make one from a couple of thrift store sweaters. First, choose a large pullover with a pattern you like to use for the bottom of the dress.

Then, find a coordinating sweater that fits your shoulders and bust with a neckline you like for the top of the dress.

Measure, mark, and cut the waistline of the top sweater. Measure, mark, and cut the newly desired length off the bottom of the sweater that you are using for the bottom of the dress. Be sure to add a half inch to each measurement for a seam allowance.

You may have to cut around the armhole seams of the sweater in order to get the length you want. If that’s the case, you will need to use a straight edge to mark a new seam line to straighten out the sides. Sew along this line.

Trim the new seam allowance.

Use the longest stitch on your sewing machine to baste all around the top of the skirt.

Place the top sweater inside the skirt with right sides together and line up the raw edges. (Your shirt will be upside down inside your skirt.) Match the side seams and the front and back centers. Pin in place.

Since the bottom will be larger than the top you will need to ease the two pieces together. Pull on the bottom thread of the basting stitch to gather the skirt to match the top sweater. Pin in place. Then sew the raw edges together with a half inch seam allowance.

Measure your waist, subtract two inches, and cut a piece of 1/4 inch elastic to that length. Measure and mark every quarter. You will have three marks on your elastic.

Match the center and side marks and pin the elastic into your seam allowance. (The ends of the elastic will be on the center back mark.) The elastic will be smaller than the waistline of your dress, but that’s OK because you’re going to slightly stretch the elastic to fit as you sew.

Use a zig zag stitch to sew elastic onto the seam allowance. Stretch the elastic slightly as you sew to match the side and center marks. This will pull the waistline of the dress in to fit your waist perfectly.

Now you’ll be ready for any winter social event. So far, I’ve worn my new dress to a Winter Solstice party, and a Christmas Eve family get together. I’m planning on wearing it to the New Year’s Eve party up at our local ski resort, Anthony Lakes. It’s so comfy, I’d wear it everyday if I could!
