Saving for the Average Person: Buying on ebay

The internet is a wonderful way to find things that you need at great prices. And not only find things, but find great deals in the privacy of your own home with no pressure or wasted time or wasted gas money. One great site that anyone who does not live under a rock knows is: eBay.com

I have been a member of eBay.com for many, many years and while I do not use it that often I have found some really great deals.

A few of my great finds include a thick, queen sized feather bed with cover for $65 with shipping, Halloween costumes that we could not find in our area of northern Illinois or couldn’t find for a better price. Last Halloween my daughter was a musketeer and needed a hat, I found one on eBay.com for 20 bucks! Two thirds cheaper than a local costume shop!

Other deals include every home school book I ever bought for pennies on the dollar. Some even included great notes in the margins from the home school moms I bought them from. One year I even bought a sheep’s eyeball dissection kit! Not sure how we got that past eBay! I paid half of what a science store wanted. Art books were found for dirt cheap, as were art supplies.

Just recently I found a signed and authenticated Ron Santo Cubs jersey for my husband for our anniversary. I made a grown man cry with that one! I won’t tell you what I paid, because there is always someone in the crowd who will say that is frivolous and a waste of money. And then I will have to say “I do not write about NOT spending money, I write about how to save money on the things you need, want and enjoy.” I will tell you that I paid what the jersey was worth and basically got the signature for free with certificate ad picture of Santo signing the jersey.

How did I do it? I picked a late night auction during the week. Most people use eBay on the weekends. I waited until the bidding was almost over and then with 2 minutes left I bid a bid that was over the minimum bid and had a funny amount of change at the end. Example $1.67 This increased my chance of winning throwing off the other bidders. My tactic worked and I won easily.

If you have not used eBay.com or even if you have here are a few tips for using it safely and wisely:

The first thing you should look at before you bid on anything is the sellers feedback. If they do not have a lot of feedback or their feedback is below 99% keep moving. No matter how tempted you are by a great deal, it is not worth it if the seller has bad feedback.

Also read the comments that are left for sellers, this way you can gage what kind of service you can expect. A good seller may sell great products, but be slow on shipping. Or they may be fast on shipping (my jersey) but never answer emails (bad!)

When you find good, reliable sellers stick with them, book mark them and tell your friends about them.

A good way to increase your odds of winning an auction is to bid late and bid weird, like the funny change I told you about. Also bid higher than normal in the last moments. And while you most likely will not pay the full amount of your high bid, you have to be prepared to pay that much if the bidding goes wild. So do not bid too high if you are not willing to pay it. Sellers on eBay do not take kindly to people who do not pay. And you will get penalized with bad remarks and marks.

One huge tip that you should really pay attention to is this:

IF YOU LOSE AN AUCTION AND GET AN EMAIL LATER OFFERING YOU YOUR ITEM, DO NOT BELIEVE IT. A PROBLEM ON AUCTION SITES IS THAT ANYONE CAN SEE WHO IS BIDDING, AND THEN CAN GET YOUR EMAIL BY LOOKING YOUR NAME UP ON EBAY. THEY THEN EMAIL YOU PRETENDING TO BE THE SELLER.

A friend of ours did not follow his gut and ended up wiring $3500 to a stranger for a motorcycle. He wanted it so bad, that he even ignored the advice to buy insurance on that money he was sending. You can imagine that there is virtually no way for the police to get his money back. (Which they haven’t.)

So the moral of my story is this: You can find great deals, but be wise and safe!

PS...I NOTICE PEOPLE TALKING ABOUT PAYPAL BEING THERE TO HELP YOU GET YOUR MONEY BACK IF A DEAL GOES WRONG..BE WARNED EBAY OWNS PAYPAL NOW AND THEIR COSTUMER SERVICE IS TERRIBLE. I MADE A COMPLAINT ABOUT BEDDING THAT WAS NOT AS DESCRIBED AND WAS TOLD NO FROM THE BEGINNING...THEY WOULD NOT EVEN TAKE A PHOTO OF THE BEDDING!!! DO NOT COUNT ON PAYPAL TO HELP YOU!

FOLLOW MY ADVICE ABOUT BUYING FROM REPUTABLE SELLERS AND YOU WILL BE BETTER OFF!
