How to Make a Vintage Collage Necklace

Making your own jewelry is a creative way to express yourself with wearable art. A collage necklace uses mixed media to make whimsical jewelry pieces composed of a variety of materials that you may already have on hand. You can make a collage necklace with fabrics, beads, glitter, paint, small embellishments and even words cut out of a magazine. You can also use vintage embellishments such as buttons, lace and pieces of costume jewelry.

Things You'll Need

  •     Colored felt fabric
  •     Assorted fabric pieces
  •     Buttons
  •     Lace
  •     Black ribbon
  •     Beads
  •     Small vintage embellishments
  •     Glue gun
  •     Scissors
  •     Needle and thread
  •     Sewing machine

  1. Cut out the felt fabric into an upside-down crescent-shaped piece that is approximately 6 inches wide and 4 inches high. This will be the base or background of your vintage collage necklace.

  2. Lay the fabric flat on the table. Arrange the lace at the bottom the fabric so that it hangs slightly over the edge to give your necklace a vintage look. Use the sewing machine or needle and thread to sew the lace onto the felt fabric.

  3. Arrange the beads, fabric cutouts and vintage embellishments such as old charms or buckles into a collage on the felt. Design your collage necklace any way you desire with a mix of colors and textures.

  4. Sew the beads, buttons and fabric cutouts to the fabric using a needle and thread. Glue the other embellishments onto the collage necklace using the hot glue gun.

  5. Cut two pieces of ribbon that are about 12 inches long each. Sew the ribbon onto each end of the fabric collage at the pointed ends of the crescent shape. The ribbon will be used to tie the necklace around your neck and form a bow at the back.

Tips & Warnings

  1. Find old beads, buttons and charms at vintage shops, flea markets and garage sales to make a vintage collage necklace. This type of necklace is also called a bib necklace.

  2. Other background material for collage necklace include large buttons, industrial washers and leather pieces.

  3. Ensure that the collage necklace is not too heavy; it should lay comfortably in the area of your collarbone. Use glue sparingly to avoid making the fabric too stiff. Ensure that beads and other small items are securely attached to the fabric as these can be choking hazards for small children.
