How to Make a Toddler Tie Out of an Adult Tie

Young children in formal wear make a picturesque addition to a wedding party and other special events. However, dressing your toddler son in a suit and tie can be a challenge as young boys may find a tie uncomfortable. You can make an alternate clip-on tie for a toddler out of an adult tie with beginner sewing skills and these tips.

Things You'll Need

  •     Adult tie
  •     Measuring tape
  •     Scissors
  •     Marker or pencil crayon
  •     Sewing Machine
  •     Sewing threader
  •     Needle and thread
  •     Metal necktie clip
  •     Glue

  1. Measure the length and width for the tie. This is the distance from the shirt collar to the waist line of your toddler. The width of the tie should be almost the same width of your toddler's coat lapel, if he is wearing a coat as well.

  2. Open the seam at the back of the adult tie using a sewing threader and spread the tie flat. Mark the measurements on the adult tie using a marker or pencil crayon.

  3. Cut out the width of the re-sized toddler tie. Leave the length of the tie the same. Resew the thinner tie by sewing it inside out. Turn the tie right side out and knot it around your own neck as if you were putting it on. The knot should be proportionate in size to your toddler's shirt collar so that it correctly fits into the space between the collar ends.

  4. Take off the tie and adjust the knot to the correct length of the tie. You should now have a large neck loop area and the smaller toddler size tie. Cut the neck loop area approximately an inch from both sides of the tie's knot.

  5. Fold the cut areas back beneath the tie's knot and sew them in place with a needle and thread. You should now have a toddler size tie with a knot and no neck loop. Complete the clip-on tie by placing a small amount of glue onto the back of the tie's knot to attach it onto the front of the metal clip.

Tips & Warnings

  1. You can find a metal neck-tie clip at a haberdashery or sewing store. Alternatively, use the metal clip from a name tag that is typically worn at conferences and other events.

  2. Choose a tie color and pattern that is complementary to your toddler's outfit and suitable for a young boy to wear. Have your toddler help choose the color as he may refuse to wear the tie or take it off, if he does not like it. Iron the cut tie before sewing to make the edges even.

  3. Young children should wear clip-on ties only. A traditional tie that wraps around the neck is unsafe for small children because there is a risk of accidental strangulation while they are playing and running around.

  4. If you do not have sewing skills, ask someone that does to help you make this tie.
