How to Make Orange Potpourri

The fragrance of citrus fruits such as oranges offers fresh natural scents to your home environment without needing aerosol sprays or candles. Potpourris including these citrus materials can be simmered or left dry as ornamental and fragrant home aromatic essentials. Knowing how to make your own orange potpourri isn't difficult and doesn't take very long to master, as long as you've got the desire to experiment with a wide range of botanicals to create a pleasing and environment-freshening home simmer.

Things You'll Need

1 cup dried rose petals

1 cup dried bay leaves

1 cup dried lemon grass

1 cup fresh orange peels

3 qt. pan

1 - Add the bay leaves, rose petals and lemongrass to the saucepan on the stove.

2 - Pour enough water into the pan to make the ingredients just float slightly. This may be about 1 1/2 qts. of water.

3 - Turn the stove on its lowest setting and add the fresh orange peels.

4 - Let the pan simmer for about an hour. During this time the water will hydrate the dried ingredients as their natural scents mingle with the fresh essential oils of orange leaking from the peels.

5 - Remove the orange peels after the pot has simmered for an hour and discard them. The fragrant oils have distilled from the peels and have spread throughout the water by this time. Turn off the stove and allow the potpourri to cool to room temperature. The scents should last a few hours at a time.
