Eating fish offers a lot of benefits as it is high in protein, low in saturated fats, and high in unsaturated fats and contains Omega-3 fatty acids. This is one of the preferences for a healthy meal especially those who are losing weight. Additionally, this is very much recommended for healthier heart and mind. During pregnancy however, it may tell a different story. There are some particular types of fish that could be harmful to pregnant women due to high level of mercury that may be present. Let us discuss further.

Eating fish has been proven to be an essential to a person's diet. it has less fat at the same time has iodine and omega-3 fatty acids that are important in the development of the brain. Yet as we have mentioned earlier, certain types of fish could be harmful to pregnancy health and specifically predator fishes. Some fishes that could fall under this category are sharks, king mackerel, tile fish and even the all-time favorite tuna.

Predator fish eat small fish as its food. this means a higher probability of the transfer rate for mercury that may be present in a fish body. A form of mercury that maybe present to fish called methylmercury. It is highly toxic and harmful to fetal health when eaten as it can cause developmental problems. Its effects are slow cognitive development, slow progress in walking and talking and other developmental problems. Moreover, the mother could also have the health risks such as poor concentrations and mood swings.

If you are unsure to the safety of the fish that you eat, it is best that you consult your medical practitioner. Moreover, it will help you recognize the type of fish to avoid through images other than by name.

Eating a healthy diet is essential to pregnancy. Everything that an expectant mom consumes can affect the health of the baby and her health. Therefore taking extra precaution and reevaluating what is served in the dining table should be taken into consideration so as to avoid possible mercury contamination especially to fish eaten at home.

The effects of mercury to pregnancy are often irreversible and damaging. With the right prenatal care, you can avoid these things to happen and affect your pregnancy.
