Use a mason jar to create herb planters. They don't require a lot of space and you can put them anywhere there's adequate lighting. I created this for my wife who loves to cook with fresh herbs.

Wide mouth mason jars
4 inch clamps
River rocks
1 - I'm using a wide mouth mason jar. The opening is about 4 inches wide. The small river rocks are for drainage. I'm also using a 4-inch clamp to secure the mason jar to my storage rack. You can find these at your local hardware store for around $1.50.
2 - Here's a close-up of the clamp that I'm using.
3 - You'll also need your herbs for planting. Instead of planting my herbs from seeds, I just bought them from Sprouts, they were 3 for $10!
4 - I couldn't find cilantro, so I ending up buying the seeds.
5 - Fill the bottom quarter of the mason jar with river rocks. If you over water the plant, this will give the water some place to drain.
6 - Remove the herb from the container.
7 - Loosen the dirt to let the roots breathe.
8 - Depending on the jar size, you may need to remove some more dirt.
9 - Tight squeeze, but it fits. I'm not sure how this will do in the long run.
10 - Here's the thyme and rosemary that I've planted. You can leave the jars on any shelf, countertop, or table where there's adequate lighting.
11 - Using the clamps, I've mounted my jars on one of the storage racks that we have in our kitchen.
12 - Don't over tighten the clamps. You can just tighten them using your hands or a flat head screwdriver.
13 - Close-up of my project!
14 - Here's the lineup, mint, thyme, oregano, and cilantro!
