5 Companies Whose Products Are Still Made In The Usa

By Prev Info - October 18, 2022

As the search for profits turned away from internal improvements, short cut decisions aimed at increasing profit margins by moving jobs to cheap labor overseas drained U.S. manufacturing. Lots of technology and intellectual property followed.

Heck, we said, who wants to work in a factory job? Kids went to college in record numbers, coming out with degrees that would put them in white-collar jobs serving finance, law, Wall Street and the world. That was then. Boy, oh boy, have things changed.

Without dragging out all the dirty financial, political, and Hollywood laundry, suffice it to say America took a slide. Not surprisingly, a huge number of the population adopted a pretty dim view of America's future. Well, chin up, America. A clutch of high quality American companies continued through tough times, finding ways to keep employees busy and profits coming in without moving to a foreign country. Here are, in my humble opinion, the top five.

1. Lodge Cookware, South Pittsburg, Tennessee Making cast iron skillets from the business founded 117 years ago, Lodge just broke ground for a new expansion of the current factory, going from two 3-ton melting decks, to two 10-ton melting decks, a new pouring line, and new sand machine. All of their products are made right there with the exception of the enamelware line, which amounts to about 20 percent of their production. There are simple rules in cooking with cast iron, but if you season the pan properly it will give you a lifetime of service. Scratch that. It will give you generations of service. I have my father's fishing skillet that is over 50 years old, and it makes a fabulous omelet.

2. Eastland Shoe, Freeport, Maine Since 1955, this company has been turning out classic, comfortable boat shoes, boots, and moccasins for men, women and kids. Leather uppers, handsewn, hard-wearing shoes for 'feet with a life' as the company likes to put it, Eastland makes a great product committed to design, manufacture, and promotion in the good old United States of America. Try them. You'll like them.

3. Round House Manufacturing: Shawnee, Oklahoma Blue jeans. Everybody loves them. Everybody wears them. If you want a good, solid pair of sturdy, good looking, affordable jeans, check out Round House. If you want a great pair of jeans, made by a company exporting to China instead of being created there, check these out.

4. Fairbault Woolen Mills, Fairbault, Minnesota In a plant that dates back to the 1890s, and recently reopened after a two year silence, Fairbault Mills is open and operating as one of the oldest fully integrated woolen mills in the U.S. They wash, card, spin and weave domestic wool into incredibly beautiful blankets that you will pass down to your children. With four new looms, two new edge finishers, and engineering upgrades, this company is coming back strong and delivering a product every American should be proud of. Yes, these are more expensive than fleece throws, but these are blankets that will give ten times the number of years and still look fabulous.

5. Channellock, Meadville, Pennsylvania In the early 1890s, George DeArment began forging hand tools for farmers, selling them out of the back of a wagon. He built the business on principles embracing that people are more important than machines, and bigger doesn't always mean better. In business now for over 125 years, Channellock continues to make tools that every household needs: pliers, wrenches and screwdrivers. Next time you're out buying tools, make sure to put your hands on some that will do the job today, tomorrow, and many years into the future.
