By Prev Info - February 28, 2022

Hand, foot and mouth disease is a viral infection that is common in infants and children. It is a mild illness that is contagious through contact with nasal and throat fluids, saliva and fluid from blisters. Good hygiene can prevent the spread of hand, foot and mouth disease. To identify if your child has hand, foot and mouth disease, follow these steps.

How to Identify Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease

Instructions

1 - Look for symptoms that your child does not feel well. Having a feeling of general sickness is usually the first symptom of hand, foot and mouth disease.

2 - Monitor your child for a fever. A fever is an initial symptom of hand, foot and mouth disease.

3 - Notice if your child has any painful sores, blisters or ulcers in their mouth. Hand, foot and mouth disease is marked by painful mouth sores.

4 - Watch for a rash on the palm of your child's hands, the soles of their feet or on their bottom. A red, flat rash that manifests itself on these locations is a marker of hand, foot and mouth disease.

5 - Visit the doctor and confirm your suspected diagnosis. Your doctor can confirm the viral illness.

Tips & Warnings

If the child is old enough, rinsing with a numbing mouthwash, administering non-aspirin pain reliever and staying hydrated can help make your child comfortable.

Hand, foot and mouth disease is usually a mild disease that lasts about 7 to 10 days. Call your doctor immediately if your child develops other symptoms or extreme discomfort.
